- I have been working with a couple USR Sportster VI's at work, and have all
- kinds of problems (manual not specifing that the serial port only works to
- 38400, for example), not least of which is the lousy documentation, and
- the useless WWW site that USR has put up- largely marketing fluff, and no
- phone numbers (for technical help, anyway) or useful downloads (flash ROM
- upgrades, docs, ARA CCLs, etc.). I will never buy (or recommend a friend
- buy) a USR product based on my experience with the ones we had inflicted
- on us by our peerless MIS group.

- I have a Motorola Power 28.8 for home use, and would highly recommend it
- to anyone- It worked well from the beginning, and provides consistant high
- speed connections to my ISP. If only I could get our MIS folks to buy some
- for the folks at work, instead of the aggravating USR's. I was pretty
- neutral on this until I had to waste a bunch of time figuring out why
- remote access connections didn't work- now I can understand (and endorse)
- the USR flamefest featured in this newsgroup.
-
- A simple example- check out the following URL's, and see which has the
- most useful information downloadable (I usually work on comm problems at
- night, at home, and so internet access via WWW and FTP for flash ROM
- upgrades, docs, etc. is useful to me. I also avoid toll calls to BBS'es,
- when possible).
-
- Motorola:
-
- USR:
-
- If USR would provide the same kind of information on it's WWW site that is
- available (at least, assumed to be available) on it's BBS, I wouldn't be
- as torqued as I am- but really, a communications company that is this
- goofy doesn't inspire much confidence. Just for fun, see if you can find
- the one 800 number buried in the USR WWW site, and then use that number to
- get connected to technical support, where you can listen to music for an
- hour (from 11:30 to 12:30 CST) before hanging up in disgust- no way to
- leave a message for a call-back, either. I'm just glad it wasn't on my
- nickel, which is apparently the norm for USR tech support.

- Just my $0.02, YMMV.
